TRUE STORIES

Yanna Kaykov, Human Resources
"As a recent grad from Northern Illinois University, I was looking for that "ideal" job.  Interview after interview, I was constantly disappointed. The "real world" wasn't as glamorous as I thought it would be. More so, I just couldn't picture myself working at any of these places. I shared my frustrations about my search with Rabbi and Suri Garfinkel. I met the Garfinkels a few years back, when JET brought Aish Cafe, an on-line course in Judaism, to NIU. Soon after, I was on a ten-day trip to London with thirty fellow Chicagoland students. It was a trip that I will never forget.  After the trip, I stayed in touch with the Garfinkels and the Kahns for Shabbos and other JET events. To my surprise, JET was not only able to open my eyes a little bit wider to the world of Judaism, but was also able to get me an interview with an amazing company. They introduced me to Bruce Leon, an active member of the Jewish Community and owner of Tandem HR, an outsourcing firm in Oakbrook, IL and Benefits Solutions Group. I was hired full time as a Marketing Coordinator at Tandem HR. I absolutely love my job and enjoy coming in to work every day, unlike many of my peers. This is all thanks to JET and their commitment and dedication to their students. I am forever grateful! "

Alyssa Zeller, Graphic Artist
"While just chillin' at a Loyola Hillel barbecue party, I met Rabbi Garfinkel, a rabbi with a sense of humor and occasional "Mr. Moviefone" voice schtick. He and Rabbi Kahn were passing out flyers for a 10-day Jewish Chicago college student trip to London sponsored by JET. I thought, "Oooooh, that sounds fun!" I decided to go, since I had the travel bug and figured it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I couldn't pass up. The trip turned out to be an incredible experience...touring London with a Jewish twist. I never imagined that paintings of Queen Esther existed in Windsor Castle (where the Royal family lives)! Learning about Jewish life in London, being immersed in the culture, and making new friends enthralled me. This eye-opening trip has left me with memories that will last a lifetime and the realization that it is possible to seek Yiddishkeit in almost any part of the world. The spiritual journey didn't end there, though. I have enjoyed spending Shabbos in the 'Chood many times and continued learning with Mrs. Garfinkel. Rabbi Garfinkel also found me an internship in graphic design at Asmakta, Ltd. that I needed to fulfill my major. It was wonderful working in a Jewish environment at the Wi-Fi building in Skokie and studying Jewish topics with my co-worker. Kosher food at lunchtime was readily available, and leaving work in time for Shabbos was never an issue. Fortunately, Asmakta, Ltd. enabled me to design projects that would give a corporate edge to my portfolio. I am grateful that JET has been a part of my life."
